Tips for the Best Dressed, by Gentleman Norman

It is that time of year again to celebrate San Diego's best dressed with Leonard Simpson at his 10 Best Dressed Awards of 2012 event, hosted this year by ballroom champion and So You Think You Can Dance! judge and choreographer, Mary Murphy! We attended last year and it was an absolute sight to be seen. Gowns, furs, jewels, crisp tuxedos, and not to mention overflowing beauty from within (a rare trait to see held by every individual in the room).

 Gentleman Norman

Best Dressed, Laura Martella and Gentleman Norman

This year, I'm thrilled to be sitting with Gentleman Norman and his lovely lady, Laura Martella, at the event (who was awarded as one of Leonard Simpson's best dressed). In preparation for the fabulous event, I got a chance to speak with Gentleman Norman and get a few tips for the best dressed!

Here's what darling Gentleman Norman had to say...

LMP: How do you define someone who is "best dressed"?
GN: I think it is about the fit of the garment and what looks best on you. Also what is age appropriate. It is not necessarily all about head to "paw" labels. I am a big fan of high/low mixing. Anyone can go out and buy expensive labels - it's how you style them that matters.

LMP: What is one piece in your wardrobe that you never leave the house without?
GN: I know I just commented on "labels" but honestly its my Louis Vuitton collar. It's timeless and has a well worn look.

LMP: Who are your favorite designers?
GN: For me, Ralph Lauren. For my lady, I think she looks amazing in Stella McCartney dresses.
I am very in to "lady like."

LMP: Is there anybody in specific that you look up to in the fashion world?
GN: I really like Ken Downing the fashion director of Neiman Marcus. He always has fresh ideas with out being too over the top. My people are talking to his people to set up a time to talk fashion man to man. Also, I think Ralph Lauren is just about as iconic as it gets when it comes to elegance.

LMP: What do you do to prepare for an event you want to look your best at?
GN: I always take care of myself and my looks.  I have regular grooming appts and a good at home regimen. I typically look the same going out for lunch as I do for black tie. I also prefer my lady to not look to overdone for black tie. I'm not into "fussy."  I do recommend a bit darker eyeshadow for black tie so that eyes are defined for photographs.

LMP: What is the most important grooming tip that should never be forgotten?
GN: Number one grooming tip: keep a copy of my book Gentleman Norman - How To Be a Man readily available.

LMP: Any last piece of advice for always dressing your best?
GN: Trends come and go, but grace and manners never go out of style!

Temptress Cranberry Lips

Don't put the cranberries inside of your lips, save them for the outside of that fabulous pout of yours! Cranberry lips are my newest obsession, and it's only appropriate that I share this with you the day before Thanksgiving.

My mom said to me the other day, "that's the new color, wear it every single day until the others catch on." Well, as I look down at my Chanel rouge noir's dwindling appearance, I think it's time to share.

From a deep deep red to as dark to black as you can get, these shades are so so hot. I prefer matte to shine personally, but after seeing a few of these burgundy seductions down below it's a toss up!

My favorite dark hues out this season are produced by Chanel, YSL, and Tom Ford. Although, if this is something that you don't want to commit to, go cheap! No one will notice if it's done right.

Oh, and a few tips:

1. Lip liner! Don't apply without it, or you will have burgundy running down your face like a vampire. It really saves the day, and this is coming from someone who never uses it (me)!

2. Let someone help match you with the right shade, these dark cranberries come in warm and cool tones, and compatibility with your tone really makes or breaks it.

3. If using a gloss, try one that's already dark because the color of the lipstick will stain the brush. You don't want to use a fabulous new blush pink and stain the entire thing black will never go away.

4. Keep your eyes clean and avoid blush. You don't have to go with a totally nude face, but dark lips will really be brought out with no other distractions (other colors, sparkle, etc.)

5. Air kisses only!

Khaki Jacket in Da Club.

Hey creepy guy in the khaki jacket, we see you shakin' that thang. You've got moves, but that jacket you're wearing makes no girl want to come within 10 feet of your bottle of booze.

What were you thinking getting dressed to go out to the club? Did you think you were on an aggressive safari of roaming cougars? Maybe you were thinking you were at a dinner party at Ralph Lauren's? Or perhaps it was right after Labor Day and this was a good change up from your white denim jacket?

In any event, it's not working for you.

I'm not dissing the khaki jacket (although a lot of sh*t talking has been made about it) because it can be worn right - boating, picnicing, if you're Chuck Bass...

However, this is a look that no man, including Brad Pitt, should be wearing inside of a trendy spot past sundown.

Here are some alternatives to your khaki in the club:

1. Black V-neck.
2. Black blazer.
3. Black button down.
4. Black Lanvin jacket.
5. Black anything else.

Save the khaki for her...

Make Your Bootie Look Good This Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is a time to count your blessings (1 Manolo, 2 Manolo, 3 Manolo) and remember what you're thankful for (love you, Loubs).

I just came back from my extended weekend trip to the city of San Francisco and I saw these beautiful booties that I'm about to feature up close and in person at Barney's - so, they definitely have my official stamp of approval. With rich tones and closed toes, they're fabulous for this time of year! Not to mention, the height highlights your slimmest part to perfection - your ankles.

Let me recommend a little something (or few) that you'll be guaranteed to fit into no matter how much feasting you manage to partake in this Thanksgiving. These ones in particular will make your "bootie" look divine!

Check out these soles to be thankful for...

Hipster Beanies are Back.

"You lose 75% of heat through your hat" and "if your feet are cold, put on a hat" may just be myths, but I find them to be great excuses to stock up on fun hats for the winter! Currently, I'm lusting after the ever so hipster, beanie.

Ok, I know what you're Justin Bobby?

Or maybe you consider the beanie to be only a look for an Olsen to pull off?

(not true, because Kim K. is rocking the beanie too)...

Now, lets check them out by taking a step outside of celebrity land...

A Taste of Fashion in Napa.

Early Thursday morning, my boyfriend and I will be flying out to San Francisco for a fun weekend with our good friends (The WineTastic Weekend blogger and her amazing other half) in the city and in Napa. We're going to The Appellation Trail: Tasting Napa Valley (an event part of Flavor! Napa Valley) on Friday night and after reading Michelle's recap from last year's event - A November to Remember: Recap of The Appellation Trail Event Experience - I am having the hardest time staying focused on anything else!

This weekend can't come fast enough...however, making my way to packing couldn't happen any slower! Dressing for SF is second nature - city clothes are my standard. Napa on the other hand? Packing options for a ruggedly chic look takes a little more thought.

But, don't worry! I did all the thinking for you. Here are a few options for looks that I found off the streets to bring to the country...they're not your typical skinnies & knit sweater ensemble and give off some major inspiration points to keep in mind when putting together your own look...

1. Cashmere, sequins, and suede boots.

2. Maxi, plaid button down, fun up-do.

3. Neutral dress, black leather jacket, ankle booties.

4. Chunky sweater, full maxi, shoulder bag.

5. Floral dress, wrap scarf, knee-high socks.

6. Knit cape, leather leggings, leopard shoes.

Prada; A Gentleman's Stamp of Approval

I adore Prada. To me, Prada is a staple of sophistication. It also receives a gentleman's stamp of approval - every male in my life seems to love Prada as well...especially on women. Prada is the perfect mix of masculinity and chicness - i.e. the lesbian Prada loafer? Brilliance.

Just this morning my Father walked into my office and on my desk was a Prada bag of mine (Large Saffiano Top Handle Bag in Grey) that I recently swapped into for the weekend. Before my Dad even says hello, he states, "is that a new bag?" I said, "No Dad, this is the one you got me for Christmas last year." My father picks it up admiring it and says, "I just love this color." My dad isn't even a fashion forward type of guy by just so happens he appreciates the wisdom of Tim Gunn and "Versache" - it's in our genes...what can I say?

Anyway, as I was checking my emails later on this morning and I saw one from Saks featuring the new Prada Resort 2013 collection. Obviously, these were too many hints from the fashion gods screaming at me to throw up a blog post already.

Check out the collection, the gentlemen and I are obsessed with...
